Ghana’s Volta River Authority (VRA) has signed a contract with Wellhead Power Development LLC to undertake the conversion of the Tema Thermal Power Complex into a dual fuel plant.

Valued at $11.6 million, the works, when completed, will enable the power station to run on natural gas from the West African Gas Pipeline in addition to the more expensive diesel which has been the primary fuel for production.

Mr Kweku Andoh Awotwi, Chief Executive of VRA signed the contract in Accra with Mr Paul Cummins, Vice President of Wellhead, according to a statement from VRA on Friday.

Mr Awotwi expressed confidence in the credentials and capabilities of Wellhead Power Development to deliver quality work on the plant.

He said “In today’s challenging power generation markets, fuel cost and plant capacity utilisation have become critical factors for most gas turbine users. As such, the capability to switch to less expensive fuels has become economically attractive.”

Mr Cummins assured VRA that his company would put in every important resource to ensure that top quality work was achieved.

Among those present at the ceremony were Mr Kirk Koffi, VRA’s Deputy Chief Executive (Engineering & Operations), Mrs Angela Domakyaareh, Director of Legal Services and Mr Richard Badger, Director of Thermal Generation.
