Some angry youth at Bongo in the Upper East Region yesterday besieged the Bongo District Police Station, where they insisted that Corporal Justice Amu of the said station must be arrested and detained for allegedly raping a deaf teenage girl on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 10, 2012.

Earlier, the angry youth had gone to the palace of the chief of Bongo, Bonaba Baba Salifu Alemyarum, to express their displeasure with the way the police were handling the rape case involving their colleague and for that reason, they were going to the policeman’s house to lynch him.

However, the Chief of Bongo intervened and called on the police to arrest their colleague immediately to avoid any bloody incident in the district.
Following that advice, Corporal Justice Amu, believed to be 35 years, was arrested from his home and detained in police custody at about 11:35 am on Wednesday July 11, 2012, probably to appease the angry youth.

Reports gathered by DAILY GUIDE on Wednesday July 11, 2012, from a source in Bongo, said the police officer, Justice Amu, on Tuesday July 10 saw the deaf girl walking towards the main lorry park.

According to the source, the police officer signalled her to sit on the pillion seat of his motorbike for a ride to her destination.

When they got to a location along the road in front of the Bongo Rural Bank, the victim tapped Justice Amu’s shoulder to indicate that she had reached her destination, but he refused to stop and kept speeding; and out of fear, the girl started screaming for help.

He rode at top speed into the District Assembly Guest House, where some police personnel in the district resided, dragged her into a room and forcefully had sex with her.

The source said by the time people who saw him speeding with the girl could get to the guest house, Justice Amu had allegedly finished raping the girl and was relaxing carelessly on the bed, while the girl lay in pain on the bed, with blood oozing out of her private parts.
The case was immediately reported to the police and a medical form was issued for them to get a confirmation of the rape incident from the Bongo District Hospital.

Management did not want to tell the media what the report contained, but confirmed that a hearing-impaired girl was brought to the hospital on Tuesday July 10, an hour after she had allegedly been raped by the police officer.

Surprisingly, the police officer was not arrested until about 11:35am on Wednesday, after the youth had threatened to lynch him.

When DAILY GUIDE visited the Bongo Police Station, the police personnel there were not ready to talk to the media, as they were waiting for order from above, before they could speak on the matter.

The Chief of Bongo, Bonaba Baba Salifu Alemyaarum, in an interview with DAILY GUIDE, said if the police officer was found culpable, he should be made to face the music.

According to him, there had been so many complaints about Corporal Justice Amu bullying people in town.
