The officer shot Umorem in the head while the latter was in a traffic jam
A trigger-happy mobile police officer, who shot and killed a driver identified as Goddy Umorem in a traffic jam at the Swali Market area of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, has been arrested by the State Police Command.
The State Police Command spokesperson, Fidelis Odunna (DSP), confirmed the arrest on Monday.
“It is true that the driver died. The officer concerned has been arrested and is with the state C.I.D. I am very sad,” he said.
The tragic incident occurred as Umorem was heading to his company’s base at Akaba village.
An argument ensued between him and the police officer. An eyewitness said the driver had already passed a civilian controlled traffic that resulted from an ongoing construction work on the road when the police officer attached to the construction company ordered him to reverse and go back.
The source said the police officer was angered when the deceased pleaded that he could not reverse because there were vehicles behind him. This was said to have angered the police officer who went to the front of the Hilux van Umorem was driving and shot him in the head, killing him instantly.
The late driver’s employer, Dr. Azibapu Eruani, described the incident as unfortunate. He urged the police to unravel the circumstances of the death.
The deceased’s remains were deposited at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) mortuary in Yenagoa.
