People of Sepe,Aboabo,Asawasi and Sawaba are furious and will readily charge on the police should they sight them. This comes up after Kwaku Asante,an alleged armedrobber was gunned down by the police on Saturday.According to the people, claims by the police that the deceased was a robber and was carrying arms are null and void.
However, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander is insisting that the man gunned down by the police at Sepe-Timpom in Kumasi, was indeed a criminal.
According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Augustine Gyening, the Regional Commander,Asante was a gangster and that he was found with a machete.
The family of the deceased intend to address the press this afternoon to submit their concerns. They also denied claims that they cursed the police force for that act.The Assembly member of the area also backed the family to deny that Asante engaged the police in a gun battle as the police would want the public to believe. The Assemby member told OMGGhana reporters that the deceased was only part of the youth at Sepe-Timpom, who tried to fend off an attack on their community by a marauding group of gangsters.
He was murdered in cold blood. He was first shot in the leg to immobilize him before the police finished him off with another shot.He was part of the the youth that were helping the Assemblyman fight off some intruders. We are ready to defend the community if the police still insist on claims to disgrace our royal. An eye witness confessed to OMGGhana.
However, the police is still insisting that their claim that Asante was a robber is true. DCOP Gyening confirmed this in a press conference held to throw light on the incident that the late Asante belonged to one of the criminal gangs, terrorizing the residents and that apart from the machete the deceased was holding, he also had another cutlass concealed in the pair of trousers he was wearing.
He said nine suspected gangsters, whose ages range from 12-17 years had been arrested and gave their names as Issaka Abubakar, Faisal Alhassan, Awudu Seizzan, Adams Rasheed, Gado Zakaria, Fuseini Adams, Surai Mohammed, Sumeila Abdullah and Kamal.
Police did debunk claims by the people that the police faked the arms around the deceased when he was displayed at the Central Police station.According to the police, they also seized nine locally manufactured pistols and eight live cartridges from the suspects
