The Premier League Board is warning current league leaders Kumasi Asante Kotoko is yet to win the league. Kotoko mathematically won the league title during the weekend with four matches remaining. However, PLB chairman Welbeck Abrah Appiah has described the “Media League Champs” as contenders who are yet to win the cup.
“Kotoko has not being declared champions as yet, who declared them? The rule is such that if you sometimes go against the rules of the game, you will lose match and even lose accumulated points, three accumulated points for each of the matches,” he said.
Adding, “what about if there is a situation where Kotoko, the remaining four matches they go about some of these problems, we (PLB) can deduct as much as twenty four points from them”.
Kotoko have now opened a 15-point lead ahead of their title chasers, AshantiGold who suffered a 3-1 defeat to Liberty during the week. Despite struggling to draw 0-0 with relegation-threatened Berekum Arsenal at the Baba Yara Stadium, the Porcupine Warriors have secured an historic 22nd title in the Ghana league.
Meanwhile, there is a controversy among the media over the number of titles won by Kumasi Asante Kotoko. It’s widely reported that the club will clinched its 22nd title but some journalists and researchers have disputed the number of titles won by Kotoko.
Kotoko, two-time African champions will return to the African Champions League after a three-year absence next season if they are declared champions by the Premier League Board.
