The National Communications Authority (NCA) says Glo Mobile Ghana Limited (Glo) has fully paid the US$200,000 fine for failing to meet its network roll-out obligations in its Mobile Cellular License.
A statement posted on the website of the NCA said Annex F of the Mobile Cellular License granted to Glo specifically required the company to roll-out its network to cover six (6) regions, that is, two (2) regions per year within the first three (3) years from the effective date of the license.
The statement said Glo breached the license condition by failing to roll-out its network for over three (3) years since the license was issued, and the NCA imposed the applicable penalty of US$200,000.00 which had since been settled in full by the company.
Glo finally launched its commercial operations in Ghana on April 29, 2012 with almost 100% coverage and presence in all ten regions and almost a 1,000 communities across country.
The company launch firmly on the back of a US750 million world class infrastructure comprising 1,400BTSs across country, the popular 2.5terabit/second Glo One Submarine Cable, with some 2,900km terrestrial spread into Ghana, which also made 80% of Glo BTSs 3G UMTS; 25 Glo World Stores and a call centre with 500 staff ready to take at least 200,000 calls a day.
Prior to the launch, there was a number reservation campaign, in which a reported 1.5 million Ghanaians reserved special numbers on a Glo network that is ready to accommodated at least 10 million for starters.
Glo Ghana Chief Operating Officer, George Andah said at the launch, for everyday Ghanaians waited for it to launch Glo prepared something exciting for Ghanaians.
In fulfillment of that promise, the company launched with very juicy promotional offers, including 20Gp free credit everyday for the first 100 days, 100% bonus on every recharge, free night calls, 1Gp for calls to a specially selected number by the users and a few more exciting offers.
Immediately after the launch there was stampede at all Glo World Stores across the country, full of people activating their reserved Glo numbers; and some had challenges using their supposedly activated numbers several days after the activation.
But Glo said that phase is over and customers are now able to use their Glo numbers easily.
In the third quarter ending September 2012, the NCA’s subscriber base report would for the first time indicate how many customers Glo has in Ghana.
