The British media house has opened votes for the five players up for one of the most respected football awards on the continent. The Marseille player will be in a battle of votes with Samuel Eto’o of Cameroon, Seydou Keita of Mali and the Ivorian duo of Gervinho and Yaya Toure.

Voting can be done via text and the internet, with the winner being decided solely by football fans. Voting also ends on December 9 and the winner announced a week later.

Achievements

For the year under review, Andre Ayew has grown in stature for club and country. He has been key in Ghana’s qualification to the next African Cup. For Marseille, he led them to annexing the French League Cup and Trophee de Champions (the Super Cup).

Gervinho was Ayew’s rival in the hunt for trophies in France, but he was fantastic as Lille hauled the French top flight and FA Cup. Despite being mainly as an impact player, Seydou Keita of Mali was an important cog in the wheel of Barcelona as they won the La Liga BBVA and the European Champions League.

Samuel Eto’o great annual form went on this year, scoring 21 goals for Inter that helped them challenge, futilely, Milan for the Scudetto. He then left for Anzhi Makhachkala in August where he has banged in seven goals in eight matches for the Russian top flight side.

Yaya Toure hit in the goal that won the FA Cup for Manchester City and has been phenomenal in their current quest to grab silverware that has eluded their history books.
